Operating margin

The share of sales left as profit from the core business, after all running costs.

How it’s calculated

Operating income ÷ revenue. Operating income is profit before interest and tax.

How to read it

It shows how efficiently the day-to-day business turns sales into profit, before the effects of how it is financed or taxed.

One-off charges in a single year can pull it down temporarily.

How StockDecks scores it

Higher scores better. On the general benchmark, 0% counts as weak, 12% as typical and 25% as strong.

It is one of the measures behind the Profitability rating. Every measure, benchmark and weighting is set out on the methodology page.
