Earnings growth

How fast a company’s profits are rising or falling.

How it’s calculated

Change in earnings compared with a year earlier, as a percentage. StockDecks shows two readings: year on year, and the latest quarter against the same quarter a year before.

How to read it

Earnings can move much faster than revenue in either direction, because costs don’t always rise or fall in step with sales.

Growth from a very small or loss-making base can produce enormous percentages that say little.

How StockDecks scores it

Higher scores better. On the general benchmark, −20% counts as weak, +5% as typical and +30% as strong, for both readings.

It is one of the measures behind the Growth rating. Every measure, benchmark and weighting is set out on the methodology page.
