Gross profit to assets

How much gross profit a company’s asset base produces in a year.

How it’s calculated

Gross profit ÷ total assets, both from the latest annual accounts.

How to read it

It measures how productive the business’s assets are. Research on company quality has found it one of the more useful single profitability measures, because it is harder to distort with accounting choices than measures further down the income statement.

Asset-heavy industries (utilities, property, banks) naturally score lower on it than asset-light ones.

How StockDecks scores it

Higher scores better. Around 25% is roughly neutral; 45% and above scores well, and below 5% scores poorly.

It is one of the measures behind the Profitability rating. Every measure, benchmark and weighting is set out on the methodology page.
